Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
601 PM MDT Sun Mar 15 2026

.UPDATE...Updated aviation discussion.

&&

.KEY MESSAGES...
- Warm front will bring a dusting of snow to northern mountains
  late tonight and Monday morning.

- Strong warming trend Monday and Tuesday, with widespread
  record high temperatures and dry conditions Tuesday through
  Saturday.

&&

.SHORT TERM /Through Tuesday Night/...
Issued 253 PM MDT SUN MAR 15 2026
The area is currently sitting underneath northwest flow aloft,
pinched between an upper-level trough moving east through the
Central Great Plains and high pressure building in over the
California coast. The rest of today will be cool, with
temperatures below-normal and some breezy winds in the Western
Magic Valley. A warming trend begins tonight, with a warm front
starting the process with a dusting of snow late tonight and
Monday morning in northern-most mountains of our CWA.
The upper-level ridge slowly moves east from the California
coast into the Desert Southwest Monday and Tuesday. The upper-
level heights and temperatures are reaching climatological
maximums with this intense upper-level ridge, highlighting the
anomalous nature. Temperatures will be near- normal Monday, and
quickly increase to 10-20 degrees above normal by Tuesday
(thats increasing several degrees over the course of one day).
Record high temperatures are expected as early as Tuesday in
southeast Oregon, with near-record highs in southwest Idaho,
with even further warming to follow.

Monday afternoon will be breezy in the Snake Basin and
southwest Idaho Highlands with speeds 15 to 25 mph, and gusts to
30 mph, but Tuesday will be calmer. Skies will be mostly clear
in southern areas and partly cloudy in the north behind the warm
front.

&&

.LONG TERM /Wednesday through Sunday/...
Issued 253 PM MDT SUN MAR 15 2026
An anomalously strong ridge of high pressure is expected to
dominate the weather into next weekend. Both ensemble and
operational model guidance remains in very strong agreement
regarding the ridge, leading to high forecast confidence in much
warmer and continued dry conditions. Temperatures are expected
to remain 15-25 degrees above normal area-wide Wednesday into
Saturday. Lower valley high temperatures will approach records,
with a very high chance of exceeding 80 degrees (90-100% chance
from the Treasure Valley to Magic Valley of Idaho).

There are hints of a system late in the weekend that could bring the
area closer to normal while introducing the chance of precipitation
for northern areas. Ensemble data is trending toward this solution
for Sunday and beyond.

&&

.AVIATION /00Z Monday through Tuesday/...
Issued 557 PM MDT SUN MAR 15 2026
A weak warm frontal passage this evening will bring overcast mid
clouds and a slight chance (15%) for showers for northern
terminals, including BKE and MYL. Brief MFR/IFR conditions will
be possible in the showers through 06/07Z. Surface winds less
than 10 kt tonight. Winds aloft at 10kft MSL:
NW 10-30 kt.

KBOI...VFR with increasing clouds and ceilings approaching
6000/10000 ft through 12Z. Surface winds light less than 6 kt.
